"Gimme Back That Filet-O-Fish"

Gimme Back That Filet-O-Fish

If you tuned into our MomTV show today, you probably noticed Jim and Chris having fun with Frankie the Fish. Frankie is the mechanical singing fish from the McDonald’s filet-o-fish sandwich commercial that became an Internet hit last year. The singing fish with the quirky song, “Gimme Back That Filet-O-Fish”, has generated millions of online views, hundreds of user-generated videos, fan parodies and a boat-load (pun intended) of filet-o-fish sandwich sales for McDonalds.

Now everyone can bring Frankie home thanks to Gemmy Industries and their replica of Frankie The Fish. You can find Frankie in retail stores nationwide including Bed Bath & Beyond, KMart, CVS, Rite Aid, and BJ’s for $20. Be warned, however, his song will be stuck in your head for days! Don’t believe us? Watch the commercial below and find out for yourself.

Toy Fair Blog

Published on Friday, February 19th, 2010 — Comments

By Jim Silver (Follow Jim on Twitter at @JimSilver)

Toy Fair is over. I saw over 1000 companies, and 10,000 new toys and my head is spinning! What were my favorites? Too many to mention in one short article. However, Kung Zhu looks awesome. Never heard of Kung Zhu? It’s the boys version of Zhu Zhu Pets.

There are great radio control toys from SpinMaster and Mattel for under $25.00. Wait till you see the new Scrabble Game from Hasbro- Scrabble Flash. It’s so addicting. Wait till you see the new board games from Lego!

There was so much to talk about, but I think the best part is companies are keeping price points very affordable on toys. Look for the new toys to hit our site as they become available, but the best part is we’ll have video reviews of at least 500 toys this year so you can see them work before deciding if they’re right for your family.

Néih hóu (Hello) from Hong Kong!

Published on Thursday, January 7th, 2010 — Comments

By Jim Silver (Follow Jim on Twitter at @JimSilver)

As I am writing this, I am sitting in a hotel room in Hong Kong. For those who aren’t familiar with how the toy industry works, hundreds of toy companies gather in Hong Kong every January. They set up in offices they have here, or in hotels to show buyers around the world their newest toy offerings for 2010.

Before I start talking about toys for 2010, I must mention that the food in Hong Kong is absolutely fantastic, especially if you are a fan of “real” Chinese food or seafood. Now, back to the toys.

As a big child, I am excited by everything I’ve seen for this year. Toy companies are staying on the path of keeping low entry price points for the consumers. While technology keeps improving, some of the best toys for 2010 will be about play, not technology.

You might be surprised by all of the new toys hitting the shelves right now. While you might think new toys only come out for the holidays, there are new products coming out continuously. That’s why we are busy year round!

Over the next month, you will start seeing reviews of our favorite toys hitting the shelves. We also have a special announcement coming in early February about a new weekly column on Time to Play… stay tuned for even more fun!

It’s SOLD OUT!!!!!!

You’re looking for a Zhu Zhu pet or a Mindflex and you can’t find one anywhere. It’s at the top of your child’s wish list, and you need to come up with this toy(this is where we need to define “need vs. want”). What should you do?

  1. Bounce from store to store until you find it. This usually ends up in failure. If you’re going to try this method, go to the stores that carry the most toys. You can try calling ahead, but that doesn’t usually work, especially for large stores. Then try some smaller local toy stores, as sometimes you get lucky.
  2. Get to know the sales help. They often know when the next shipments are arriving. And be nice! Acting crazy, rude or demanding won’t get you any good tips or information. The next NICE customer will get the tip – Always be nice!
  3. Buy a different toy and a small gift card. Gift cards extend the holiday season, and allow a child to spend fun time walking through a toy store. For a child, visiting a toy store with a small gift card is an outing; they can spend hours there.
  4. Go online. You’re already online reading this, start hitting the web sites that sell toys. A search for a specific toy will usually bring up several different sites. You could always go to eBay and see if you want to buy and pay now at a premium, or wait till later.

Trio Building System

Published on Thursday, September 24th, 2009 — Comments

By Jim Silver (Follow Jim on Twitter at @JimSilver)

By Jim Silver (Follow me on twitter)

As I’ve previously written, the Construction category is a very hot category in the toy business. From Lego having another banner year, to the great early success of Halo Wars from Mega brands, kids have rediscovered building toys.

There’s a new player entering the market this year, as Fisher-Price has entered the building category with Trio. The Trio building system is specially designed to make building easier for even the smallest of hands. Three “grow with me” building levels make building a snap. Kids can feel and hear the click when they’ve connected the building pieces and the pieces will stay together throughout play, only coming apart when kids are ready to take them apart.

When I first saw Trio a year ago, my initial thought was “do we need another building system”? However, after personally playing with the blocks, and watching kids play with Trio and not wanting to stop, I’ve realized Trio is different and a welcome addition that younger kids will enjoy playing with.

Construction Toys – On Fire

Published on Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009 — Comments

By Jim Silver (Follow Jim on Twitter at @JimSilver)

By Jim Silver (Follow me on Twitter)

Okay, we aren’t talking literally on fire. We’re talking about the construction toy category that is having a very strong year, despite the economy and despite the popular, though incorrect, notion that kids only want to play with electronics.

LEGO bricks have always been a kids’ favorite over the years. First introduced in the U.S. in 1960, LEGO has been a perennial bestseller, but over the past year-and-a-half, sales have exploded. (Again, not literally.) While many companies have been badly hurt by the current economy, LEGO achieved 38 percent growth last year, and has continued to grow this year.

What’s made this success? Well, successful toys have always mirrored what’s going on in the culture, and in many toy categories that’s meant having toys that feature popular characters and themes from entertainment. Believe it or not, only 12 years ago that LEGO didn’t have any brick sets based on movies, TV shows or characters. Today, much of the company’s success has been with Star Wars, Spongebob, and Thomas the Tank Engine. In addition to providing the fun and imagination of open-ended building, these themes and characters provide fertile ground for creative play—and kids naturally want them. Last year, the Indiana Jones LEGO sets were some of the best sellers ever for the company.

Typically, older kids migrate into more sophisticated building sets, such as LEGO’s Mindstorms or other robotics, but that’s a comparatively small group versus the kids who just love to build. MEGA broke new ground this year with an introduction of a line of construction blocks based on the hit video game, Halo. What’s significant about this is that “conventional wisdom” would say that kids who like games like Halo aren’t going to want to play with blocks. So far, sales are proving that very wrong. In fact, as has been demonstrated in other categories—notably collectibles, comics and cards—people who are into a franchise such as Halo are very likely to want to have a “Halo experience” with other kinds of products. What raised a few eyebrows when it was launched has now got lots of companies thinking about what the next big hit is going to be.

The appeal of construction toys for kids has always been the build-play-display experience. Whether a child is imaginatively reenacting an adventure from the Isle of Sodor with Thomas or imagining the next fighting ship for Halo, these toys fire the creative spirit in virtually anyone—making a great pastime and delivering lots of fun. These toys have enduring appeal precisely because they are not electronic and because they engage a different part of the imagination (and the brain) than other types of play. Having that balance with themes that are appealing to various different sets of consumers helps keep a classic play pattern very contemporary. And that’s what this has all been building up to.
